Babe Ruth vs. Travel

Each year, parents with players emerging from Little League are confronted with a choice of playing Babe Ruth Baseball or Travel Baseball. Like most things, there is no single solution for all players and all circumstances. There certainly are differences between the two, each having advantages and disadvantages for individual players. Please read this letter from Coach Pannell, a long time coach for Springfield Babe Ruth, that sheds some light on the issue.

SBRL Wants You to Volunteer!

SBRL is a quality program run by volunteers. Without you, the league will not run. The cost of providing Babe Ruth baseball to each player, is much more than the registration fee. Whether you have a little time or a lot, you can help. We are in need of volunteers to help at several positions to make it possible for yor children to play baseball. Please offer your help at registration or call 703-451-8325.

New Team Formation Policy

Springfield Babe Ruth knows that for many reasons players like to play with friends and coaches they have played with before and coaches like working with players they have coached before. For these reasons it is now possible for players to stay on teams they have played on the previous season. This has been a very successful policy in our senior league for many years and we have now extendeded it to the 13-15 age division. This policy also extends to teams coming out of Little League that would like to stay together as they transition to Springfield Babe Ruth. We are still preserving our younger leagues (Prep, International and Major Leagues), but it is now possible for teams to form up as Prep teams and stay together until they reach our Senior league. If you have questions about this new policy, please inquire about it when you register this year.

Hooes Road Park Improvements

Springfield Babe Ruth is proud to announce the latest efforts to improve the baseball field at Hooes Road Park. Springfield Babe Ruth has been working with the Fairfax County Recreation Department to improve the field, a project that dates back to 2003, before the current field existed.

Last year Springfield Babe Ruth installed roofs over the two dugouts that will provide welcome relief from the hot sun during late spring and summer games.

Springfield Babe Ruth provided $15,000 in addition to a grant received from the Fairfax County Recreation Department to build back-to-back batting cages on the third base side of the field. The batting cages will allow both teams to take batting practice simultaneously.

For earlier pictures of the field and to learn more about the baseball field at Hooes Road park, click here Hooes Road Park Field .

Springfield is committed to making the Hooes Road Park baseball field one of the finest in the Fairfax County Recreation Department. Coming soon will be a scoreboard beyond the centerfield fence.

Improving the baseball field requires help from Springfield Babe Ruth members. We will be looking for volunteers to help with several projects at the field that are listed here. Please consider volunteering for these projects. They will benefit your player as well as all players in the league.

  • Installing artificial turf on the concrete floor of the batting cages.
  • Running electric lines to the new scoreboard.
  • Installing the scoreboard.
